Sailing Courses

FFSC is an RYA Approved Training Centre that runs courses for both the general public and club members who want to learn to sail or improve their skills. The training centre promotes sailing as a way of getting more involved at the sailing club. Tuition is taught by our experienced instructors using industry standard equipment.

Taster Sessions

For absolute beginners and those wanting to find out more about what is on offer from the club this is for you. Get afloat for the first time on the River Deben and learn how the boat works.

  • Aim: to provide a first time experience to those who want to try sailing
  • Minimum age: 8
  • Ratio: 1 instructor to 3 students (Max)
  • Assumed Knowledge: None
  • Duration: Morning (9.00 to 12:30) or Afternoon (13:30 to 17:00)

ADULT COURSES

RYA Level 1 – Adult Beginner Course

RYA Level 1 is aimed at the absolute beginner. It includes an introduction to sailing in all directions and awareness of launching and recovery. By the end of the course you will be able to crew competently and sail in light winds with an instructor.

  • Aim: Provide an entry into the sport and gain experience crewing and helming.
  • Minimum age: 12
  • Ratio: 1 instructor to 3 students (Max)
  • Assumed Knowledge: None
  • Duration: 5 Mornings (9.00 to 12:30)
  • Cost: £190 (£160 for FFSC Members)

RYA Level 2 – Adult Improver Course

RYA Level 2 is aimed at those who have previously Level 1 or have prior experience. The aim is to consolidate your basic knowledge of sailing, develop an awareness of safety and by the end of the course you will be able to sail a dinghy without an instructor in light winds.

  • Aim: Improve and build confidence to sail the boat on your own.
  • Minimum age: 12
  • Ratio: 1 instructor to 3 students (Max)
  • Assumed Knowledge: RYA Level 1
  • Cost: £190 (£160 for FFSC Members)

Courses take place over 5 mornings Monday to Friday. 09:00 to 12:30.

Advanced Courses

Seamanship Skills – Become the master of boat handling. Pick up a mooring buoy, rescue that man over board, park on that jetty, sail without a daggerboard or even a rudder? Learn how to do all that in just one course!

Sailing with Spinnakers – Want to go faster than ever? A spinnakers course is for you. FFSC uses asymmetric an symmetric boats to teach you how to sail down wind effectively.

Start Racing – If youve got a competitive streak in you and want to beat all the rest get on a start racing course and learn how to start a race and tactics for beating your friends (and enemies). The perfect course to understand what goes on in club races and get involved yourself. Once youve mastered this move onto Intermediate and Advanced racing courses and set your sights on being a national champion!

All advanced courses are £200 and run over 16 hours – 5 mornings or two full days.

YOUTH COURSES

Our Youth beginner courses are run during the week over 5 mornings or afternoons. RYA Stage 1 and 2 is equivalent tot the Adult RYA Level 1 course. Breaking courses into smaller chunks make them easier for young students to learn and achieve. These courses are suitable for those aged 7 – 16.

RYA Stage 1 – Start Sailing

The RYA Stage 1 is the perfect beginner course for those going afloat for the first time.

  • Aim: Introduction to Dinghy Sailing

  • Aim: Independent sailing under supervision
  • Minimum age: 8
