The club is an RYA approved Powerboating Centre and runs courses year round for both the general public and club members wanting to improve their skills.
Driving a powerboat is a great feeling and is an essential part of supporting our sport. Appropriate training ensures that powerboat drivers, their passengers and other water users feel confident and safe. FFSC offers powerboat courses in tidal conditions in the river and at sea.
RYA Powerboat Level 1 – Start Powerboating
The RYA Powerboat Level 1 aim is to introduce powerboat handling and safety in powerboats and is conducted over one-day. (8 Hours). It focuses on preparation, launching and recovery of powerboats. Personal buoyancy and equipment, low speed handling, steering, starting and stopping, approaching jetties and making fast. Loading & balancing a boat, awareness of other water users and rules of the Road (IRPCS). After completion of the course, you will be able to enter the Power Boat Level 2 (Power Boat Handling) course. Depending on acquisition of skills during the Level 1 course the level 2 course may be able to be offered at a reduced time.

RYA Powerboat Level 1 & 2 (Combined)
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed and collision regulations. The course is designed for the absolute beginner and existing powerboat users. It is the industry standard qualification allows you to rent powerboats in the UK. After completion of the course you will also be able to apply for your International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which will allow you to rent powerboats abroad.
Expect to spend at least 70% of the time afloat as the emphasis is very much on hands on learning around the harbour and at sea. The course includes launching and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard After the course you will be a self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of each type of craft.

Safety Boat Course
The safety boat course is integral to supporting our favourite watersports. This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities. The course includes boat preparation, boat handling, dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak or canoe rescue (can be covered as theory), towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users. By the end of the course you should be able to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing
