Sailing Courses

FFSC is an RYA Approved Training Centre that runs courses for both the general public and club members who want to learn to sail or improve their skills. The Training Centre promotes sailing as a way of getting more involved at the sailing club. Tuition is taught by our experienced instructors using industry standard equipment.

Taster Sessions

For absolute beginners and those wanting to find out more about what is on offer from the club this is for you. Get afloat for the first time on the River Deben and learn how the boat works.

  • Assumed Knowledge: None
  • Duration: Morning starting at 9.00 or 9.30 or Afternoon starting at 13:30 or 1400 for 3 hours
  • Minimum age: 8
  • Aim: to provide a first time experience to those who want to try sailing
  • Cost: £65 (£60 for FFSC Members) + £15 per additional person (max 3).

ADULT COURSES

RYA Dinghy Level 1 – Start Sailing

RYA Level 1 is an introduction to the sport of sailing. It includes an introduction to sailing in all directions and awareness of launching and recovery. By the end of the course you will be able to sail in light winds under supervision.

  • Assumed Knowledge: None
  • Duration: 2 Days (9.00 to 17:30)
  • Minimum age: 8 (although under 16s may prefer to learn through the Youth Sailing Scheme)
  • Aim: Provide an entry into the sport and gain experience crewing and helming.
  • Cost: £230 (£200 for FFSC Members)

RYA Level 2 – Adult Improver Course

RYA Level 2 is aimed at those who have previously Level 1 or have prior experience. The aim is to consolidate your basic knowledge of sailing, develop an awareness of safety and by the end of the course you will be able to sail a dinghy without an instructor in light winds.

  • Assumed Knowledge: Sailing skills to the standard of RYA Level 1
  • Duration: 2 Days (9.00 to 17:30)
  • Aim: Improve and build confidence to sail the boat on your own.
  • Minimum age: 8 (although under 16s may prefer to learn through the Youth Sailing Scheme)
  • Cost: £230 (£200 for FFSC Members)

Advanced Courses

RYA Level 3 – Better Sailing – Level 3 includes further coaching to consolidate all previously learned skills and taster sessions for other advanced modules. After the course you will be more confident in your sailing skills and techniques and be ready to progress onto the advanced modules. Requires RYA Level 2.

Seamanship Skills – Become the master of boat handling. Learn how to handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat. The course includes launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard and anchoring. Requires RYA Level 2. This course can be completed in monohulls or multihulls.

Sailing with Spinnakers – Learn everything you need to know about sailing with conventional or asymmetric spinnakers. The course includes how to rig the boat, gybe and recover one type of spinnaker, either conventional or asymmetric and how to sail the best possible course downwind. Requires RYA Level 2.

Performance Sailing – Improve your boat handling and confidence in performance dinghies. This course includes coaching to improve your sailing, primarily in two person boats with spinnakers. At the end of the course you will be able to sail faster and more efficiently in all conditions. Requires at least one full season following completion of an RYA Level 2. This course can be completed in monohulls or multihulls.

Start Racing –  This course includes the fundamentals of getting off the start line and round the course. This includes all the skills required to start club racing, including how to maximise boat speed and outwit your opponents. After the course you will be able to take part in club racing in good conditions. This course requires sailing and knowledge to at least the standard of the Level 2 course (Stage 3 for under 16s). This course can be completed in monohulls or multihulls.

All advanced courses are £240 (£210 for members) and run over 16 hours – 5 mornings or two full days.

YOUTH COURSES

Our Youth beginner courses are run during the week over 5 mornings or afternoons. RYA Stage 1 and 2 is equivalent tot the Adult RYA Level 1 course. Breaking courses into smaller chunks make them easier for young students to learn and achieve. These courses are suitable for those aged 8 – 16.

RYA Stage 1 – Start Sailing

The RYA Stage 1 is the perfect beginner course for those going afloat for the first time. The course includes launching and recovery, steering, parts of the boat and basic sailing. After the course students will be able to steer and understand basic principles.

  • Aim: Able to steer and understand basic principles
  • Minimum age: 8
  • Cost: £200 (£170 for FFSC Members)

RYA Stage 2 – Basic Skills

The RYA Stage 2 course includes basic sailing skills, ropework and collision avoidance. By the end of the course you will be able to tack and control boat speed, and understand basic principles.

RYA Stage 3 – Junior Intermediate Course

The RYA Stage 3 course includes rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, capsize recovery and sailing theory. By the end of the course you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions

  • Assumed Knowledge: Up to and including the Stage 2 course
  • Duration: 2 Days (9.00 to 17:30)
  • Aim: Able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions
  • Minimum age: 8

RYA Stage 4 – Junior Advanced Course

The RYA Stage 4 Course includes rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and manoeuvres in crewed boats and recovering a man overboard. After the course you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions

  • Assumed Knowledge: Up to and including the Stage 3 course
  • Duration: 2 Days (9.00 to 17:30)
  • Aim: Can launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions
  • Minimum age: 8
  • Cost: £200 (£170 for FFSC Members)
